Noamלא. Maybe not exactly a noodle. One example from the article we read was a tiny worm living inside a glass-like sponge.

MayaThat sounds magical. And also like a sentence I am not ready to say in Hebrew all at once.

NoamYes. We won't really focus on the tiny worm in the sponge. Instead, we'll keep it simple and learn how to say that some of the animals are very small.

Noamחלק מהחיות — some of the animals — are קטנות מאוד - very small.

MayaGood. I'd love to focus on the tiny worm in a glass-like sponge, but I prefer the simpler sentence you have in mind. Let's zoom in.

MayaSo Noam, today's sentence is: Some of the animals are very small.

NoamIn Hebrew: חלק מהחיות קטנות מאוד.

MayaLet's not swallow that whole. Let's start with the first piece.

NoamGood idea. The first word is חלק.

Mayaחלק means part. Like one part of a larger group.

Noamחלק.

MayaSo if I say חלק, I am pointing to a part, not the whole thing.

NoamExactly. And now we add: מהחיות.

Mayaמהחיות. That may look like one big word, but there is a word we already know inside it: החיות, the animals.

NoamYes. We had חיות, animals. Then we learned החיות, which means the animals.

MayaSo החיות is our familiar little group of sea creatures: the animals.

NoamRight. And when Hebrew attaches the מ sound at the beginning, we get מהחיות — from the animals, or of the animals.

MayaAh, so מהחיות is not a totally new monster-word. It is החיות, the animals, with a small beginning attached.

MayaSo חלק מהחיות is literally something like: part of the animals.

NoamAnd in natural English, we say: some of the animals.

MayaThat makes sense. חלק מהחיות. Some of the animals.

Noamחלק מהחיות.

MayaI like that. It feels like we are selecting a few creatures from the deep-sea crowd.

NoamA very polite deep-sea crowd. חלק מהחיות.

MayaWe have חלק מהחיות — some of the animals. Now let's add what those animals are like.

NoamThey are קטנות מאוד — very small.

Mayaקטנות means small, when we are talking about חיות, animals.

NoamRight. חיות is plural and feminine in Hebrew, so the word for small sounds like קטנות.

MayaOut of curiosity, if the group were masculine plural, what would small sound like?

NoamIt would be קטנים.

MayaSo קטנות for our חיות, and קטנים for a masculine group. Nice little sound shift.

MayaWe do not need to make that a big grammar mountain today.

NoamNo mountain. Just hear the pairing: חיות קטנות.

MayaAnimals small. In English, small animals. In Hebrew, חיות קטנות.

Noamחיות קטנות.

MayaAnd very is מאוד.

Noamמאוד. It comes after the describing word: קטנות מאוד.

MayaSo Hebrew says small very. קטנות מאוד.

Noamכן. קטנות מאוד.

MayaI like that order. It feels like Hebrew says: small — and I mean very.

NoamExactly. Small, and then a little emphasis: מאוד.

MayaLet's connect the pieces. Some of the animals: חלק מהחיות.

NoamAre very small: קטנות מאוד.

MayaSome of the animals are very small.

Noamחלק מהחיות קטנות מאוד.

MayaAgain, with a tiny pause in the middle: חלק מהחיות קטנות מאוד.

NoamAnd more naturally: חלק מהחיות קטנות מאוד.

MayaToday, we zoomed in on the tiny side of our ocean story.
