MayaWelcome back. Today we are going deeper into the ocean story, but gradually.

MayaLast time, we learned that scientists found new animals. Today, we ask: where do those animals live?

NoamAnd the answer will take us deep in the water. עמוק במים.

MayaThat already sounds a little mysterious. Deep water, hidden creatures, and Hebrew that we will not rush.

Noamכן. We will keep it slow, clear, and friendly.

MayaBefore we dive in, let's review from last time.

Quick Review

NoamDo you remember the word for scientists? It had that little mad scientist (or "m-uh-d" scientist) sound in it. It was מדענים.

MayaAnd do you remember found? מצאו.

NoamOne more: new animals. Do you remember it? חיות חדשות.

NoamSo the sentence from last time was: מדענים מצאו חיות חדשות.

MayaScientists found new animals. Nice. That is our little bridge into today.

Story in English

MayaWe are staying with the same ocean story. Scientists found new animals, and now we are asking where those animals live.

NoamPicture the ocean again from above. Blue water, soft sunlight, maybe a boat moving slowly.

MayaAnd then imagine going down. The light gets softer. The water gets colder.

NoamFar below the surface, the ocean is not empty. It is quiet, strange, and full of life.

MayaScientists reported many species that were new to science, living in deep ocean places most humans never see.

NoamNot new because they suddenly appeared. New because humans had not identified them before.

MayaSo today's main idea is simple: the animals live deep in the water.

NoamThat is the sentence we will build in Hebrew.

MayaSlowly, with support. Because חיות is about to do something a little funny.

Noamכן. Funny, but not scary. Let's learn it.

Hebrew Lesson 1

MayaOkay Noam, how do we say the animals live deep in the water?

Noamהחיות חיות עמוק במים.

MayaLet's take just the first part: the animals live.

Noamהחיות חיות.

MayaOkay. If you just heard חיות twice, you are not imagining things.

NoamRight. First: החיות means the animals.

Mayaהחיות. The animals.

NoamThen: חיות means live. So החיות חיות means the animals live.

MayaIt looks like animals animals, but it means the animals live. Hebrew is being compact today.

NoamCompact, yes. Not broken. Just Hebrew.

MayaAnd there is a helpful little hook here. חיות is connected to life. You may have said l'chaim when you made a toast, which means "to life." Think about the חי sound when you want to say animals.

Noamכן. חיות, animals. חיות, live. The חי sound is hiding inside the word for animals and live.

MayaLet's hear it again slowly: החיות חיות.

Noamהחיות חיות.

MayaThe animals live. החיות חיות.

Hebrew Lesson 2

NoamNow let's add where they live: deep in the water.

MayaDeep is עמוק.

Noamעמוק.

Mayaעמוק means deep. It feels like a word that wants to sink down a little.

NoamExactly. עמוק. Deep.

MayaAnd in the water is במים.

Noamבמים.

Mayaמים means water. במים means in the water. You add the b sound to the beginning to indicate it's in the water.

MayaFor some reason, I associate water, מים, with Miami. מים, Miami, מים. Think of the blue water in Miami beach when you think of the word for water.

NoamOkay so עמוק is deep. מים is water, and במים is in the water. So deep in the water is: עמוק במים.

MayaLet's connect the pieces. The animals live: החיות חיות.

NoamDeep in the water: עמוק במים.

MayaThe whole sentence: the animals live deep in the water.

Noamהחיות חיות עמוק במים.

MayaAgain, with a little space between the parts: החיות חיות עמוק במים.

NoamAnd naturally: החיות חיות עמוק במים.

MayaBeautiful. Not too many words, but it gives us a whole scene.

NoamAnimals, life, depth, water. החיות חיות עמוק במים.

Conclusion

MayaToday, we went deeper into the story of the new sea creatures.

NoamAnd our Hebrew sentence was: החיות חיות עמוק במים.

MayaThe animals live deep in the water.

Noamהחיות means the animals. חיות means live. עמוק means deep. במים means in the water.

MayaAnd yes, החיות חיות may still look a little funny. That is allowed.

NoamVery allowed. Hebrew sometimes has a sense of humor.

MayaNow you have two pieces of the larger story.

Noamמדענים מצאו חיות חדשות.

MayaScientists found new animals.

Noamהחיות חיות עמוק במים.

MayaThe animals live deep in the water.

Noamתודה שהקשבתם. Thank you for listening.

MayaCome back next time, and we’ll start putting these pieces together.
